Fire Prevention for Businesses
The Fire Prevention Division provides a comprehensive fire/life safety plan review for land development, new building construction, interior remodel projects, fire suppression, and fire alarm systems. In addition, periodic construction inspections are performed to ensure that completed projects conform to both state and local fire safety regulations. These services are provided in accordance with goals established by the Romulus Fire Department for its members in service to the Romulus Community.
Adopted Fire Codes
In an effort to better protect its citizens, the City of Romulus has adopted the 2015(MJ1) International Fire Code.
To report a non-emergency fire code violation, please contact the office at 734-941-8585.
Annual Fire Safety Inspections
For existing commercial buildings, the Fire Prevention Division provides an annual inspection program that is delivered through both Prevention Division and fire station personnel. All Department personnel are part of the fire prevention team. Annual inspections are conducted to ensure reasonable compliance with the general and specific fire safety regulations for each occupancy type as specified in the adopted Fire and Building Codes.
Knox Box Program
The Romulus Fire Department has adopted the Knox Box Rapid Entry System repository system to permit access to locked buildings and facilities without forced entry. Owners or persons in control of the following types of buildings are requested to install and maintain a Fire Department Repository Unit:
- Any apartment building or other building in which eight or more dwelling units are rented for residential purposes and in which access to the building or to common areas or mechanical or electrical rooms within the building is denied through locked doors.
- Any nonresidential building where fire detection or suppression system is monitored by an alarm company or has an external audible alarm.
- Any building or facility containing a reportable quantity of hazardous materials as defined by the State of Michigan.
Plan Review, Fire Suppression & Fire Alarm
Installation/extension or modification of any fire alarm/fire suppression may not begin until a permit has been secured. Four sets of stamped plans/calculations/cut sheets/ must be submitted with an application for Plan Review by the Fire Department, and the appropriate fee paid before a permit can be issued.
Work completed prior to issuance of a permit may result in a Double Permit Fee. Routine plans are reviewed in-house, however, plans with an extensive system design may be submitted for outside review with additional fees. All tests must be witnessed by the Fire Department Code Official, for which a 72-hour notice is required.
